Lanark lives in the city of Unthank where people get strange diseases and some disappear. Lanark disappears and finds himself in the Institute where they try him. To discover his past he consults the Oracle. There is a naturalistic account of a young man growing up in Glasgow and Lanark sets out on a journey through the mist and time chaos of the Intercalendrical zone.
